General FAQ
For the lazy peeps who want the main important bits.
1. What is Astrum Venatus?Astrum Venatus is a Latin term that means Star Game. I decided to go Latin after realizing that I didnt want my OCT to be associated with Stargate, either the movie or television show. Other than that, Astrum Venatus is an Original Character tournament with Science Fiction roots. There are lots of aliens, and various planets.
2. Where/When is this OCT taking place?Good question! Astrum Venatus takes place approximately four-hundred years in the future. During the time between then and now, the Human race has discovered space travel, and subsequently that there is life on other planets. After a few hundred years of skirmish and warfare, they finally settle down and join The Alliance.
3. Okay, so whats this Alliance? The Alliance is the group of all universal nations that agree to work together. Earth, otherwise known as Terra, is a relatively recent addition to this alliance. Generally, they make decisions based on council meetings, but the leaders of the Alliance are known as the Zelians. They make up a very large power in the known universe, but not every planet that attends the Star Games has to be a member of The Alliance. In fact, they dont even have to be friendly toward it.
4. And Zelians are..?Ancient alienz that have more power than you. >> Their species profile will be listed in the species sections.
5. Gotcha. So what kind of OCT is this? Can I submit comics?Astrum Venatus is a literary tournament. All entries must be submitted in written form, though if someone wanted to make a comic as a Spectator Entry, I would adore it and put it into the SE Journal.
6. So say Ill be away for the week of writing and wont be able to finish. Can I have an extra week? That would be more than a little unfair to the other contestants. I may give an extra day or so due to Special Circumstances, but usually not more. Sorry!
7. Can my best buddy write with me in the tournament? It would be kind of hard in a single-character tournament, but if you wanted your friends to team up with you to write, Im not against it. But there will be no teaming up after the competition has already started!
8. So how long do we get to write, anyhow?First rounds will be short, maybe a week and a half, no more. After that, the time limit will extend as competition gets more intense. By the end, it
may be as much as a month, but no more than that.
9. How many people are you aiming to have participate in this?Hehe. I wanted to have a 64-man tournament, but it could be a little larger or smaller, depending on turnout. I really dont want to go larger, though.
10. So you said single-character tournament earlier. Does that mean I dont get to have my epic three-character team compete??Indeed it does! The point of the games is to compete against your opponent not by numbers, but with a one on one kind of interaction that develops character and leaves more room for creativity, and less for a lot of pointless milling around in groups. It is allowed to have one supporting character with your competitor, but they would not be allowed into the events.
11. Question. I know we can have humans, magic-wielders, and supernatural beings, but what about mutants?Allowed to an extent. As in, please make the idea of them believable enough to be in a tournament. Other than that, well see how it goes. I may allow or disallow based on the kinds of things I get.
12. I have a problem!! The character I want to use is from -insert time period here- or -insert alternate reality here-!!!WELL... easy fix. You see, Earth in AV time has the technology to cross time and dimensions to learn more about the past and future. It's part of Quantum Theory that several alternate realities are able to exist side by side, some in different timestreams... Humans and some other races have just utilized that theory in order to learn more about what dimension they're in, and sometimes bring people through. Those people do have a choice of living in the AV dimension if they so wish.
13. Is there any specific age-related target audience for Astrum Venatus?Yes... yes there is. Astrum Venatus is not for the weak of constitution. It will be a long, bloody, intense battle, and many characters WILL get hurt or even die. (I expect most of the latter prompts may be mature-contented for gore, so... yeaaaah) Therefore, I ask that only people who can handle that sort of thing enter. If you're unsure but want to try anyhow, please, enter at your own risk.
